Try A Chinese Restaurant For Exotic Decor And Delicious Food

By Adriana Noton

As a kid, the decorations at a nearby Chinese restaurant meant more to me than the food itself. They sparked a young imagination, what with the woodwork engraved with hummingbirds and flowers, the paper lanterns and the gilded dragons. Although the food is of primary importance to me now, I am still fondest of a place that can offer high quality food and an exotic decor.

I have also always loved that you can find Chinese restaurants anywhere you choose to travel. If Chinese people have immigrated there, and they have immigrated just about everywhere, you will find their restaurants. No matter if you are in South America, Canada or Europe, you can take a break from the local cuisine and eat Chinese. These restaurants often provide a welcome sense of the familiar when you are abroad. And it is fascinating to learn how the dish you thought you knew is changed to suit the local diners.

As you would imagine with a country so large, there are many different styles of Chinese cuisine. As with many areas, they are often influenced by the climate. Given its size, China varies greatly in the weather experienced from one area to another.

The Cantonese were the first immigrants from China to the United States. They came because they wanted to get away from China. But they also came to find work which they generally did with the railroads initially. At the same time, they brought their culture with them.

Often, the Chinese immigrants chose to live together in one area in large cities, for example, in San Francisco. The places where they congregated were called Chinatowns. These sections of the cities provided exotic locations where non-Chinese could experience Chinese culture more closely. Here, they were exposed to such phenomena as Kung Fu, acupuncture, herbal pharmacies and, naturally, restaurants.

Because the Cantonese were first, the first Chinese restaurants in America served Cantonese food. Sweet and sour is one of the most familiar of dishes that these restaurants serve. The chefs use many different methods to cook such as roasting, stir frying and steaming. A specialty of Cantonese is dim sum. These are pastries that are stuffed with a variety of fillings including vegetables, meats or even sweets such as red bean. These restaurants are very popular for brunch on Sundays.

Later, waves of immigrants came from other areas of China, bringing with them other varieties of Chinese food. One of the best known is Szechuan, a very spicy type of cuisine from the largest province in China. As this area was along trading routes, it had outside influences from places such as India, well known for their hot spices. Szechuan food makes use of peppercorn and chili peppers as well as onions and garlic.

You can usually find many different types of Chinese cuisine in one restaurant these days so you can try many different tastes in one place. Chinese dishes tend to be served in portions large enough for sharing. It can be a lot of fun and a great learning experience to go with a group and share a lot of different styles. Whether you are just hungry or you want an entire gastronomic experience, you can find a Chinese restaurant near you to meet your needs. - 30543
