Restaurant Business Branding - Choosing a Name

By Patrick Sutherland

One of the most important aspects of creating a successful restaurant concept is deciding on a suitable name. A name, along with other branding such as a logo will come to represent all that your restaurant promises in the way of food, service and atmosphere. A great name will help you to reinforce your reputation in the market and to create and grow a valuable brand over time that diners acknowledge for its high standards.

Here are some tips to think about when choosing a name for a restaurant.

1) Try to come up with a name that will appeal to the customers that you are trying to target. Your name could be chic, exotic, funny or simple and practical depending on the crowd that you are trying to attract.

2) It is great if you let customers know the style of food they can expect by including the style of cuisine that you serve within your restaurant name. Customers are always happy when they get what they expected.

3) Incorporating the owners name in the restaurant name can offer a nice personal touch. However, while you can still sell your restaurant at some point in the future it may be more difficult to find prospective buyers as they might think that the name wont be so relevant anymore if the original owner who the restaurant is named after is no longer involved.

4) Seek inspiration from restaurant names in other cities and countries rather than those in your town so that you are able to decide on a name that won't get mixed up with the names of other nearby restaurants. Make sure that you have full legal rights to use the name.

5) You will at some time in the future require a website for your restaurant and will need an appropriate domain name. Do a quick check to make sure that a suitable name is available before you choose the final name for your business.

6) Great business names are easy to remember and easy to pronounce. Do a trial run with your family members by reading them a list of options that you are considering and then see if they are able to remember them a several days later, and pronounce them without making any mistakes.

7) Consider hiring a naming expert. This will be an additional expense but may not be as wasteful as it sounds. A great name will be one of the factors contributing to your success and if you are entering a competitive environment then expert help may end up being cost effective.

Lastly, you should choose a name that you will be proud to be associated with, something that inspires you to get out of bed every day and achieve your goals. A restaurant name has to be a good fit with you as well as with your patrons. - 30543
